I didn’t last 3 days…….

I recently tried the Soylent diet and found out very quickly it’s not for me. I am normally not one to try out diets but I was trying to be supportive. My husband learned about the Soylent diet from friends at work. He decided in order to try and meet military standards he would try it. He did ok off and on but had a hard time sticking to it. I asked him why, he said “Because I miss the texture and taste of food.” So aside from being supportive I had the thought that maybe I could stand to lose a few pounds as well. I had no idea what I was in for. My husband didn’t buy the mix premade he bought what he needed to make the mix himself. He mixed the ingredients and put them into Ziploc bags. The first day I really struggled with the flavor. I guzzled quite a bit just to make sure I drank it all. That was not the best idea. It made my stomach not feel so great and it didn’t seem to give me any extra energy (which I need a lot of). The first night it was hard not to eat dinner with the kids. Pippi made a delicious dinner of steak, mashed potatoes and gravy. The smell alone is what made it the hardest. I put Pippi in charge of meals for the time being. I am hoping it will teach her some responsibility and appreciation for food. I took a nice walk to the store in order to pick up some mints and gum. Those two things are what works best for my upset stomach. The walk was nice and I thought I can totally do this thing as long as I have mints. The second day was a lot easier as I begged my husband to put in a banana and cinnamon. The taste wasn’t better just easier to tolerate. Lunch and breakfast seem to be easy as I normally don’t eat breakfast and sometimes I don’t eat lunch until 1 or 2. I spent most of the day thinking about all the food I wish I could eat right now. The hardest part again was dinner. Pippi made tacos. The yellow rice alone was a huge temptation that was hard to say no to. I slowly drank my banana cinnamon Soylent shake. I soon came to the realization that this was maybe too big of a shock to my system too quickly. After talking with my husband, I decided I would finish out the third day and be done. The third and last day was the hardest. The shake tasted even worse than the first day. It made my stomach feel very queasy. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make it through the day. I knew after the morning shake I couldn’t drink it again. My stomach took a few days to get back to normal. I guess I can say I tried it and didn’t like it. It was a good reminder of why I don’t approve of diets. Eating healthy and exercise are always best.

  1. I should add, i watched my mom diet all her life and I never understood the preoccupation with the perfect body. Somehow our culture suggests Our value is tied to our body shape. Its not. First world problems.

    1. Perfection is something I think is unattainable. Being happy with my whole self is what I strive for. I still have some confidence to build up but wouldn’t be where I am without my Catholic Faith.
